Recognized as a leader in computational science thanks to the efforts of Jim Noyes, professor of computer science, Wittenberg played a pivotal role in securing a $250,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to create a scalable inter-institutional structure to enable the delivery and implementation of undergraduate computational science education statewide.
Awarded to The Ohio State University Research Foundation, the proposal was submitted jointly by the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) and the Ohio Board of Regents, both of whom consulted Noyes throughout the process.
Noyes established a computational science minor at Wittenberg in 2003, and in recent years, computational studies have produced enormous advances in almost all fields of scientific inquiry, including DNA sequencing, behavioral modeling, global climatic predictions, drug design and medical visualization. Noyes, who has been a member of OSC’s Statewide Users Group for years, will serve on the project’s coordinating committee.
