Alumnus' Gift Transforms Commencement Hollow
Yet another reflection of the momentum being generated by the enthusiasm of students, faculty and alumni of Wittenberg's new strategic plan, Distinctively Wittenberg: A Vision for Excellence, a thorough redesign and expansion of Commencement Hollow is nearing completion. Inspired by the energy of the strategic plan's objectives and dynamic new residence hall, Lewis Shaw '66, a long-time Wittenberg board member and real estate developer living in Dallas, Texas, generously offered to underwrite the cost of the transformation of the university's treasured Commencement Hollow into a multi-use outdoor venue. The new setting will not only serve as the traditional spot for Commencement activities, but also a range of outdoor assemblies. With a stage and ample power included in the planned design, the Wittenberg community will be able to enjoy outdoor concerts, plays, movies and various presentations in addition to occasional classes on the new "steps" - naturally landscaped seating areas designed and arranged to accommodate both the large graduation crowds as well as the smaller audiences for student presentations. The redesign plan also preser ves the traditions associated with Commencement Hollow, including its fabled "Kissing Bridge," which will remain an important component of the new and improved landscape.
