Board Honors Smith’s Legacy By Renaming Arena

In recognition of the late Pam Evans Smith ’82, former head women’s basketball coach, senior woman administrator and associate director of athletics, the Board of Directors unanimously resolved on Oct. 20 to rename the Arena, formerly known as the new gym, the Pam Evans Smith Arena.

The resolution, presented by the Board Committee on Resources and Marketing, noted Smith’s outstanding instruction, coaching and distinguished service to her alma mater. It also cited her record of success with more victories than any other coach – male or female – in the history of Tiger Athletics. The resolution concluded with the board seeking “to memorialize her remarkable gift of self to her students, her athletes, her colleagues and to the community at-large.”

Smith, a 1999 Hall of Honor inductee, was the architect of the most successful women’s basketball program in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) prior to her death in June after a long battle with cancer. The dedication ceremony is scheduled for noon, Feb. 2, 2008.
