Student-Athlete Takes Action to Fight ALS “I had seen research on other wellknown neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, but I became fascinated with ALS,” Berger said. “It seems to me that people are unaware of just how prevalent it is, and they don’t realize we have made very little headway in the research for a cure. “I think people underestimate its severity...it slowly takes away everything that once made you a human being. When you are diagnosed with ALS, there is little to no hope for a long or even enjoyable life.” Rather than sit idly by, Berger got involved. In addition to her studies as a psychology major with a pre-medicine concentration, Berger rallied her field hockey teammates, coaches, sorority sisters and other friends to participate in the 2007 Walk to D’Feet ALS in Dayton to raise money for research. She even created her own Web site to help raise awareness and solicit contributions to the event, which annually raises money for ALS research. “I tried to get as many people involved as possible, but it was a busy time with the start of school,” Berger said. “Still, we raised about $500. You have to start somewhere, and I felt good about it. Every little bit makes a difference.”. Few people were as busy as Berger at the time, however, as she was in the midst of her field hockey season. Berger has been a key player on the defensive unit for the Tigers, which captured the 2007 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular season championship. In 10 appearances, including three starts, Berger ranked among the team leaders with three defensive saves. In addition, Berger is involved with the dance program through the university’s acclaimed theatre and dance department, and she is active in the Delta Gamma sorority. She also serves as the field hockey team’s representative on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), student representative with WittPath, the university’s career center, and a justice on the Student Senate Hearing Board.
