Teacher Licensure

Talented, well-educated and mature teachers represent a critical need in our society. Wittenberg has a strong cohort of adults seeking teacher licensure, with some charting chart this goal as part of their initial bachelor’s degree experience while others add it to degree studies already completed at another institution. Teacher education students graduating from Wittenberg are well prepared for the classroom.
We provide licensure for:

Early Childhood - grades Preschool - 3

Middle Childhood - grades 4 - 9

High School - in a range of integrated subject areas

K - 12 specializations: Art, Foreign Languages, Music

Intervention Specialist (formerly Special Education)

(Note: The M.A. in Education is not a program for initial provisional licensure. It requires at least one year of professional teaching experience. Enrollment is through the Education Department, not SCE. If you already have a degree, but are seeking licensure, you belong in the PROFESSIONAL STUDIES PROGRAM undergraduate post-baccalaureate licensure program.)

Wittenberg is one of the few private institutions to earn national accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Wittenberg graduates claim a stellar record in passing the state-required PRAXIS II exam, which assesses knowledge needed to teach K-12 students. While some programs emphasize speed and ease rather than quality of preparation, Wittenberg does not. As you decide, be sure to weigh carefully the need for sound preparation.

TEACH Grant Program – The Teacher Education Assistance Program for College and Higher Education (TEACH) provides grants for up to $4000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.  The student must teach for at least four (4) academic years in the low income area or the grant will revert to an unsubsidized student loan.
