Derek Boshier, who came to prominence during the British Pop Art movement in the 1960s, will be in residence at Wittenberg throughout the week of Jan. 17 as part of the 2010-11 Wittenberg Series. During his visual arts residency, Boshier will meet with Wittenberg art students in their classes, and he presented a public gallery talk titled “From Doris to Chemical Culture” on Jan. 18 at the Springfield Center for the Arts at Wittenberg University.
Studying alongside David Hockney, Allen Jones and other pop artists at the Royal College of Art in London, Boshier launched a career marked by stylistic changes as well as changes in medi
um. From pop paintings to abstract sculpture to ink drawingstophotographs and film, Boshier’s work defies classification. His graphicwork with popular musical artists such as The Clash and David Bowie brought his work to a wider audience.
Extreme Makeover,a series of Boshier’s ink drawings made on found photography,will be on display in the Ann Miller Gallery in Koch Hall from Jan. 10 through Feb. 18, while an exhibition of his paintings titled Heroes and Villains will be on display from Dec. 18-Jan. 23, 2011, in the Chakeres Gallery at the Springfield Center for the Arts at Wittenberg University. The Heroes and Villains exhibit is sponsored by John Horseman, Wittenberg class of 1976, and his wife, Susan.
