Inspiration in the Arts

Carrie Longley's Gracillus Dudus

Since its founding, Wittenberg has insisted on instilling in its students an appreciation of the arts. The tradition continues as the Department of Art exhibits the work of internationally acclaimed new media artist Vagner Whitehead in its Ann Miller Gallery and celebrates the success of alumna artist Carrie Longley ’04.

Longley, an adjunct professor of art at Wittenberg this year, recently won the 2011 Miami University Young Sculptors Competition $10,000 William and Dorothy Yeck Award. The competition is sponsored by Miami’s Heistand Galleries, and Longley was selected for her work Gracillus Dudus.

A studio artist and part-time instructor at the University of Dayton as well as Wittenberg, Longley went on to earn her master’s degree in fine arts from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 2009. She exhibits her work extensively throughout the United States and has received numerous awards including “Emerging Craftsman,” from Ohio Designer Craftsman, “The Bobby Kadis Award,” at the Penland School of Crafts, and, most recently, the MCACD Individual Artist Fellowship.

In addition to congratulating Longley, the Department is also excited to bring the Vagner Whitehead exhibit to campus. Whitehead's current work mixes sign language with photography, graphic design, public art, wearable art, video, gender issues and visual communication. His piece titled "Love" is the largest single piece of art ever shown in the Ann Miller Gallery, which is open from 9-5, Monday through Friday. Admission is free, and the public is welcome. The exhibit runs from Oct. 3-28.
