Distinctive Welcome Kicks Off 2011-12 Academic Year

The Wittenberg Way

As the 2011-12 academic year begins today, 590 new Wittenberg students will start classes, already knowing the difference the Wittenberg family makes following four days of bonding and friendship-building, Aug. 18-21.

Wittenberg welcomed its new students in the same personal manner in which they were recruited, starting with the trademark warm Wittenberg greetings from dozens of faculty, staff and alumni who helped new students and their parents unload their cars, Aug. 18.

From there, New Student Days kicked into high gear with a range of activities, including a procession from picturesque Commencement Hollow, the site of these students’ future graduation, to the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Center for a welcoming convocation. Later, Wittenberg’s own version of the Olympics commenced.

About the Class

In addition to the record number of applications, more than 6,000, the new class also boasts a stronger academic profile and greater geographical diversity, with 30 states and 15 countries other than the United States represented. Seventy-five new students have Lutheran religious affiliations, while 99 students compiled ahigh school grade point average of 4.0 or higher, including 15 who earned valedictorian honors. The class also welcomed 45 African Americans and 16 international students.

“We are pleased to have attracted so many outstanding students who are sure to enrich our campus,” said Director of Admission Karen Hunt. “Wittenberg University continues to attract top-quality students from throughout the United States and across the globe.”
