SPRINGFIELD, Ohio---Shakespeare's comedy "Two Gentlemen of Verona" will be presented at Wittenberg University in four performances April 22-25 in Chakeres Memorial Theatre, 905 Woodlawn Ave.
Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, April 22-24 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 25.
Scenes from the play opened the Academy Award-winning movie, "Shakespeare in Love," and tells the story of two friends, Valentine and Proteus, who become involved in a romantic comedy of errors.
Valentine leaves Verona to seek his fortune in Milan and Proteus decides to stay behind with his lover, Julia. Later, however, Proteus' father orders him to follow Valentine to Milan, where he falls for his best friend's newest love, Silvia. This leads a distraught Julia to follow both men to Milan where she disguises herself as a page boy to spy on her faithless lover.
The play, the final theatre production of the 1998-99 academic year, will be directed by Steve Reynolds and presented in the Italian Renaissance style as originally conceived by Shakespeare.
