WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS FIGHT AGAINST ABUSE WITH 3K RUN/WALK

April 5, 2001

Springfield, Ohio - Determined to shine a spotlight on violence and abuse locally and nationwide, Wittenberg students will host the "Run Against Abuse" 3K run/walk Saturday, April 21 on the Wittenberg campus. Organizers hope it will be the first of what will become an annual event.

Participants in the 3K Run/Walk event will trek around Wittenberg's 70-acre terrain on a combination of surfaces, and race awards will be presented at approximately 9:45 a.m. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Project Woman, a Springfield non-profit agency that supplies services and support to victims of rape and battering and their families.

"The students wanted to do something that would give back to the women in the community and show that Wittenberg cares," said Forest Wortham, director of multicultural student programs.

Race packets can be picked up between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 809 Woodlawn Ave. prior to the race. Registration fees before April 14 are $10 without a T-shirt and $18 with a T-shirt. After April 15, the cost to register will be $15 without a T-shirt and $20 with a T-shirt. Participants can also register on the day of the race at the registration table until 7:40 a.m. The registration fee on that day will be $20. Walkers must be registered to be eligible for the raffles, and race participants under 18 years of age must have a guardian's signature.

The 3K Run/Walk is being sponsored by the Wittenberg Womyn's Center, Alpha Delta Pi, Chi Omega, Gamma Phi Beta, Big Bear Supermarket, Kroger and Meijer. For more information or to register, call (937) 327-7800.
