Last year Wittenberg became one of the first U.S. campus to eliminate smoking in all campus buildings. Administrative and academic buildings have been smokefree since 1991. Next smoking was banned in common areas of residence halls but not in individual rooms. Then in 2000 the student-run Residence Hall Association completed the trend by extending the ban to student rooms. Simultaneously, the university provided additional support for smoking cessation, according to Mayes. Columbus’ Arthur G. James Cancer Center and Richard J. Solove Research Institute recognized Wittenberg’s efforts to provide a healthy and productive environment with a Resolution of Appreciation last fall. |
