Springfield, Ohio - Take a stimulating mini vacation while you learn some of the things that make America so great at Wittenberg University's fifth annual Alumni College June 8-11. Don't let the term "alumni" discourage you from registering; as the sessions are open to anyone with an interest in furthering their education. The classes begin with event registration from noon to 1 p.m. at the Benham-Pence Student Center on campus.
Participants will benefit from the knowledge of some of Wittenberg's best scholars in the areas of history, urban studies, political science, media and art. Every class will revolve around the theme Americana and will offer hands-on activities and discussion-based lectures in the premiere academic facility of Hollenbeck Hall.
Classes offered include: From Prosperity to Poverty, the '20s and '30s in America with Robert Hartje, Wittenberg professor emeritus of history; Wittenberg's Town - The Present and Future of Springfield, Ohio, by Springfield Mayor Warren Copeland, Wittenberg professor of religion and director of urban studies; The Media and Good Citizenship by Staci Rhine, Wittenberg associate professor in political science; TV, Philo T. and You by Stephen Hofer, Wittenberg class of 1962 and associate professor of communications and theatre at Chicago State University; and Major Movements in Twentieth Century American Art by Amy Morris, Wittenberg instructor of art history.
Other highlighted events of Alumni College include an All-Alumni and Friends picnic and street party on Saturday evening and a tour of the new Clark County Heritage Center in Downtown Springfield led by curator Virginia Weygandt, Wittenberg class of 1988. A commencement lunch will be held at noon on Tuesday, June 11.
While you attend the Alumni College you may choose to live on campus in the Polis House, a fine small air-conditioned residence hall or you can attend as a commuter student. Fees are $300 (single) and $250 (double) per person for on-campus occupancy at the Polis House. The cost for the commuter student is $200 per person for the week. These costs cover all classes, social events and meals.
