Springfield, Ohio -
Just a little more than a month after earning his degree in music composition from Wittenberg University, Justin Peters, snagged a gig singing in a chorus with the Boston Pops during one of the premier Independence Day celebrations in the nation.
Pops Goes The Fourth! was broadcast live July 4 from 7:30-10:30 p.m. on the A&E Network from the banks of Boston's beautiful Charles River, where the battle for independence began.. The all-star lineup included host Joan Lunden, Barry Manilow, Maureen McGovern, Miss America Katie Marie Harman, the West Point Hellcats Drum and Bugle Corps, and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, conducted by famed Keith Lockhart in his eighth season as conductor.
"To be involved with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops is obviously very special, but the ability and talent of Julian Wachner and the absolutely brilliant chorus was simply amazing," Peters said.
Wachner is the director of the Providence Singers as well as many other choral ensembles throughout the country and Canada. As Peters explained, "He is undoubtedly one of the finest musicians, directors and composers of our time." Wachner was asked to direct this chorus, which is currently nameless, for future July 4th events with the Pops and the annual Christmas concerts as well, and Peters is hopeful that he'll be able to participate for many years to come.
While on campus at Wittenberg, Peters was a founding member of WittMen Crew, an all-male a cappella group, which sold out concerts and created numerous CD's. He also was a member of the Wittenberg Choir, and he was the general manager of Wittenberg's WUSO radio station in 2001. Peters will be teaching a course on film and sound editing next year at the Lincoln School for Girls in Providence, R.I., and he will direct its a cappella group. Peters is also considering a return to his high school in R.I. to direct the men's a cappella group there.
Later this month, Peters will also be singing back-up for Barry Manilow at the Tweeter Center in Boston on July 19. Peters is a native of East Providence, R.I.
