SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Music at Wittenberg will present a Faculty Artist Recital at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12 in Krieg Hall on campus.
Assistant Professor of Music Christopher Durrenberger will perform piano works by Franz Schubert, Béla Bartók, George Gershwin, Aaron Copland and Steven Winteregg, also a member of Wittenberg's music faculty. Winteregg's composition, "Preludes a la George," will have its Ohio premiere during this concert. The work recently debuted in Florida. "It's not every day that new music gets uncovered and shared with the public, as is the case with this composition which was written in 1986," Durrenberger said.
Winteregg, my very talented colleague, wrote this piece while studying in college and no one had yet taken on all three movements of his 'Preludes a la George' until now," Durrenberger continued. Durrenberger shared that these pieces are written in the style of composer Arnold Schoenberg because Winteregg's assignment was to write something in the style of another composer. "I knew the rhythms of the Gershwin 'Preludes' really well and I thought it would be interesting to impose those rhythms into the early atonal language of Schoenberg's turn-of-the-century style," Winteregg said.
In honor of the "Year of the Blues," Durrenberger will play "Four Piano Blues" by Aaron Copland, which, according to Durenberger, is not performed very often. The program is free and open to the public.
