Wittenberg Series Brings Chairman of the NAACP to Speak During MLK Celebration Week

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Wittenberg University's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Convocation will feature guest speaker Julian Bond, chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, in Weaver Chapel on campus.

Bond has been a leader in the movements for civil rights, economic justice and peace. An activist who has faced jail for his convictions, Bond is a veteran of more than 20 years of service in the Georgia Assembly. Bond, also a writer and lecturer, is a Distinguished Professor at American University in Washington, D.C., and a professor in history at the University of Virginia.

In the Georgia Senate, Bond became the first black chair of the Fulton County Delegation, the largest and most diverse in the upper house, and chair of the Consumer Affairs Committee. During his legislative tenure, he sponsored or co-sponsored of more than 60 bills that became law.

As chairman of the NAACP Board, Bond heads the oldest and largest civil rights organization in the country. He is also a commentator on "America's Black Forum," the oldest black-owned show in television syndication. His poetry and articles have graced many publications, and he has narrated numerous documentaries, including the Academy Award-winning "A Time for Justice."

The Wittenberg Series, made possible by contributions to the college's general fund, income from endowed lecture funds, student fees, co-sponsors and foundations, has entered its third decade of providing cultural events and lectures to the public at no charge.
