SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Just Eve, Wittenberg's own all female a cappella group, has progressed to the regional stage of the International Championship for College a cappella.
The competition will take place on Feb. 1 at The Pennsylvania State University and will feature seven groups of different orientation: all-female, all-male and co-ed. The five other groups competing will be from Oberlin, Western Michigan, Penn State, Ohio University and Washington University in St. Louis. The top two groups will advance to the semifinals to be held in Michigan on March 8.
Just Eve was started in September 2001 by Libby Weaver and Stephanie Conway. Since that time, they have had a lot of help from the Wittmen Crew, including Wittenberg alumnus Rob Hall.
The group has performed various concerts and events since its inception, including at Wittfest. Just Eve also recently performed its first solo concert. Valentine's Day chapel hour on Feb. 11 is the scheduled date for the group's next performance, and another solo performance is expected in the spring. Meanwhile plans are in the pipeline to record an album in June of this year.
"For the competition we are allowed 15 minutes to perform. We will be singing 'I Will Love Again,' 'On Children,' 'Like a Prayer' and another song, possibly 'Everywhere,' which we have never performed," said Libby Weaver, president of Just Eve. Most of the arranging is done by the group, either collectively or individually.
The finals will take place at the Lincoln Center in New York City later on this year. For more information, go to varsity vocals at www.casa.org.
