SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 19, the Wittenberg University community will hear from Kevin Powell, political activist, writer, poet, hip-hop historian and multi-media commentator, who will present the keynote address at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Convocation. This free Wittenberg Series-sponsored event begins at 11 a.m. in Weaver Chapel. The public is welcome.
Powell has been hailed as one of the most important voices of his generation and his work has been published in Newsweek, Essence, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Washington Post, George and Vibe, where he worked for several years as a senior editor.
Perhaps best known for his stint as a cast member on the first season of MTV’s successful series The Real World (New York City), Powell has authored many books, including Keeping It Real: Post-MTV Reflections on Race, Sex, and Politics.
“Here is a book to read and a writer to watch,” quoted Maya Angelou in a review of the work. “Obviously Kevin Powell has the talent to see and the power to say, and he truly keeps it real.”
Powell is an admitted workaholic and risk-taker who grew up on the mean streets of Jersey City, N.J. The only child of a single mother who left the rural south in search of a better life, Powell overcame countless obstacles to attend Rutgers University where he studied political science and English.
Because of his television exposure and literary and journalism work, Powell has been a highly sought-after public speaker whose lectures have covered racism, sexism, American popular culture, Black and American history, Martin Luther King Jr., contemporary literature and the history of hip-hop at colleges and universities across America, including Yale, Stanford, Princeton, and now Wittenberg.
