SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Wittenberg University's Center for Musical Development (CMD) announces winter classes for young children. These classes are designed to give youngsters first lessons in a small group setting.
Discovering Music for Children ages 3-5 will meet from 5:30 - 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday for eight weeks beginning Jan. 21. This class is designed to begin the young child's exploration of the world of music. Singing, rhythms, stories, craft projects and an introduction to the sounds and shapes of instruments are some of the activities planned for the class in which parents are invited to participate.
Beginning Piano for Kids in grades 1-3 will meet from 5:15 - 6 p.m. on eight Tuesdays beginning Jan. 21. Students will learn to read music and musical notation, find keyboard landmarks and play rhythms and simple pieces.
Three classes for high school students and adults are also being offered. Beginning Piano will meet from 7:30 - 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday beginning Jan. 20. Participants in this class will learn the basics of piano/keyboard in a small group setting. Topics include reading music, notation and terms, keyboard landmarks and rhythms.
Theory for Curious Musicians will meet from 7 - 8 p.m. on Monday beginning Jan. 19. Students will learn theory basics to become a self-sufficient musician. Reading music and experience playing piano, string or wind instrument or voice is needed.
Jazz Improv will meet from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday beginning Jan. 21. Students will learn about the distinct musical language of jazz through listening and playing and must read music or have a good ear.
CMD also offers private and group instruction in piano, organ, guitar, strings, winds, brass and percussion to students of all ages and levels of playing.
