Wittenberg Leads E-Learning Interface Effort, Demonstrates Capabilities During National Conference

March 15, 2004

Computer-Science ClassSPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Wittenberg University is leading the way in higher education by being the first to integrate WebCT, the leading online e-learning tool, with Datatel’s Colleague database system. The partnership has created a first-of-its-kind interface that enhances student information access by creating a real-time environment of data sharing between the e-learning tool and the university’s administrative database. The announcement was made today at the Datatel Users’ Group Conference and Expo taking place in Washington, D.C.

Daniel Nelson, a programmer in Wittenberg’s computing center, was invited to the Expo in the nation’s capital to demonstrate how Wittenberg integrated the two systems.

“The integration of Datatel Colleague and WebCT Campus Edition has made teaching, learning and administration exponentially more efficient, which translates into better education for the student,” said Joseph Deck, Wittenberg’s director of computing services. “The registrar’s staff suddenly has more time to focus in other areas, and faculty no longer have to hand-deliver grades to the registrar’s office. Students find it easier to access their information with a single sign-on, so that technology is supporting their education, not presenting another learning challenge.”

Computer-Science ClassWittenberg purchased the Datatel-WebCT interface in September. The interface immediately relays changes that occur in the Datatel Colleague system, such as the adding of a course, to the WebCT Campus Edition course management system, where the student is automatically removed from the class roster.

Other institutions stand to gain similar benefits, according to the two companies.

“The Datatel-WebCT partnership has succeeded in delivering dramatic efficiencies for Wittenberg and will bring the same valuable gains to our present and future mutual customers,” said H. Russell Griffith, Datatel president and CEO. “Students will benefit directly, and institutions will be able to scale their enrollments without growing pains.”

Carol Vallone, WebCT’s president and CEO, said, “Wittenberg University is a leader in streamlining the academic enterprise and the first of our 150 common customers to benefit from the WebCT-Datatel partnership. Providing this type of integration for our mutual customers brings them closer to the ideal of a single, flexible and intelligent academic enterprise.”
