SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Wittenberg University art students have spent countless hours since the beginning of the academic year, throwing and glazing hundreds of clay bowls in preparation for their annual charity fundraiser, Empty Bowls. The event will raise money to help fight hunger in Springfield and surrounding communities. This year, the event will take place from 4 - 8 p.m., Thursday, April 1, in room 105 of the Shouvlin Center.
Empty Bowls is a national project that provides support for food banks, soup kitchens, and a number of other organizations that combat hunger.
At Wittenberg, this event has become a traditional sell-out, offering all-you-can-eat soups and breads for a $10 donation. Beautiful handcrafted keepsake bowls are included in this donation so that patrons can take them home as reminders that many people go hungry in the community each day. All proceeds will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank serving Clark, Logan and Champaign counties. Second Harvest is one of 200 agencies nationwide that provides individuals with bulk food donations.
In the past, monies raised have surpassed well over $5,000. This year Scott Dooley, Wittenberg assistant professor of art, hopes to meet or possibly exceed, that amount. Although hundreds of bowls have been crafted in preparation for the event, Dooley encourages everyone to arrive early, because in past years the bowls have sold out in the first few hours.
“We feel this event is a great opportunity to get everyone together and become more aware that many people in our community are hungry and in need,” Dooley said. “I’m proud of the students for their commitment to throwing clay bowls all these months. It is a skill that many potters seek to master, requiring patience and a lot of practice.”
Co-director of Empty Bowls, Jess Hahn ’05, from Bucyrus, Ohio, worked hard to get the community involved with this year’s event. “It is important to try and fight hunger and Empty Bowls is a terrific way to help the community help itself,” said Hahn. “I think it’s important that we all do something to serve our community.”
Hahn encourages everyone to attend the event, pay a small price for food and fellowship and pick out a unique work of art that can be used again and again.
