Springfield, Ohio — Wittenberg University’s redesigned virtual tour made its debut on the Web this week, giving the world a glimpse into the sights and sounds on campus and, in some cases, the chance to experience what life at Wittenberg “feels like.” What makes Wittenberg’s new virtual tour unique from many other virtual tours is that it was almost completely designed, written and implemented by Wittenberg students.

Jason Seegert ‘04 of Bloomington, Ind., began the design efforts last summer when he created the basic layout and template for the site. Further, Seegert created the graphics used throughout the site, contributed to the photography and implemented a new Flash-based campus map that was designed by Wittenberg alumnus Ross Gibson ’02.

One of the site’s special features is its inclusion of video. Chris Lyon ‘06 from Fort Wayne, Ind., did most of the filming for the tour and paired with Seegert in the editing process.

“It was an excellent learning experience for all of us,” said Webmaster Bob Rafferty ‘02. “It was my goal to make this a student-run project so that the tour would have a more personal feel for our prospective students.”

Adding to the “personal” touch, the tour includes four tour guides who narrate the video clips. Whitney Lehman ’04 of Findlay, Ohio, Mike Budney ’05 of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, Fiorella Ghisays ’05 from Cartagena, Colombia, South America, and Bruce Robinson ’06 of Cincinnati, Ohio, all volunteered their time to act as the “virtual guides.”

Chris Eberts ’06 of Pickerington, Ohio, and Courtney Galliger ’04 of Eagan, Minn also contributed. Eberts played a key role in the testing phase of the project and on the video production. Galliger was instrumental in selecting many of the photos.

"This is a wonderful new tour that will give our prospective students the opportunity to get a feeling for the campus when they have not had a chance to visit yet." said Dean of Admission Ken Benne '68. "Wittenberg is a beautiful place to live and learn. It's hard to capture all the natural beauty of the campus on the Web but this is the closest we can come."

“Paired with our newly designed Web site, we hope this new tour will enhance the visitor’s experience when they visit Wittenberg on the Web,” said Rafferty. “It is my hope that in addition to showcasing our great campus, people can appreciate the level of excellence our students represent because their efforts helped make this project a reality.”

Look for more updates to the tour during the next year. On the drawing board is a plan for more video, more images of campus and 360 degree images of selected campus locations. To check out the virtual tour, visit http://www4.wittenberg.edu/tour/
