The organizing theme for SCUSA 56, “Beyond Hegemony: The Goals and Consequences of American Action at Home and Abroad,” brought together more than 250 outstanding undergraduates in the disciplines of international relations, economics, political science and related social science fields from around the nation and the world to discuss major issues and formulate proposals for American foreign policy. Wittenberg University Establishes Endowed Chair In Honor Of Biology Professor
Betty PowelsonSPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The first woman in Wittenberg’s history to teach in the sciences and one of only a handful of women scientists in the nation in 1957, Elizabeth E. Powelson, professor emeritus of biology, inspired countless students during her 44-year career at the university. New Law Designed to Help Wittenberg University Work with Students in Challenging Situations
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — As Congress prepares to return to Washington, a new law called The Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act, signed by the President on Oct. 21, 2004, will make a significant difference in the lives of hundreds of young people across the nation, including students at Wittenberg University. Wittenberg Mock Trial Team Earns Respect in Cleveland, Prepares for Trials Nov. 21 and Dec. 5
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg University Mock Trial Association team competed in a four-round mock trial invitation tournament hosted by Case Western Reserve and Myers University on Nov. 5-7, which was held at the Cuyahoga County Justice Center in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Participating along with 17 schools from around the nation, Wittenberg was ranked No.1 from the first round and consistently competed in the winner’s bracket. Wittenberg Black Culture House Rededicated in Honor of Alumnus and Former Professor
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — When lawyer and longtime public servant William A. McClain ’34 returns to Wittenberg this weekend for “The Big Shebang,” the university’s Homecoming/Reunion Weekend celebration, he will be honored by his alma mater for always striving to succeed despite encountering race-based obstacles throughout his life. Wittenberg Pep Band Brings New Energy to University Sporting Events
Pep BandSPRINGFIELD, Ohio — If Wittenberg University athletes have a little more spring in their step this year at Homecoming, it could be a direct result of a little more “pep.” That would be courtesy of the Wittenberg Pep Band, one of the newest and most visible organizations on campus. After making its debut on basketball game days during the 2003-04 season, the Pep Band has become a fan favorite on football Saturdays this fall at Edwards-Maurer Field. Wittenberg University Honors Eight Alumni With Special Awards During Reunion Weekend
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Wittenberg University will honor eight of its own Saturday, Oct. 23, as part of the college’s inaugural Homecoming/Reunion Weekend celebration known as “The Big Shebang,” Oct. 22-23. Receiving the Class of 1914 Award will be Dr. Timothy E. Kremchek, a 1981 graduate of Wittenberg and resident of Cincinnati, Ohio. The university will also present Alumni Citation Awards to Cleveland resident Barbara VanLeer Evans of the Wittenberg class of 1977; Dayton resident Katherine B. Hollingsworth, a 1974 graduate; Columbus resident Henry Sturges of the class of 1973; Houston, Texas, residents Jeffrey Aarthun and Debra Garrity Aarthun of the classes of 1978 and 1977, respectively, and St. Paris, Ohio, resident Marcia Balmut Ward of the class of 1968. Wittenberg Alumnus Tapped For Nation's Most Distinguished Medical Research Award
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Scientist Elwood Jensen's mind must rarely be at rest, and the word retirement certainly does not seem to be in his vocabulary. The 1940 graduate of Wittenberg University continues to discover breakthroughs in medical science, and still teaches and conducts research, and for that the 84-year-old is being recognized with yet another prestigious honor, the 2004 recipient of the Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research. Wittenberg University Initiates Hurricane Relief Campaign
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — First there was Charley, then Frances and now Ivan. Students at Wittenberg University are doing their part to help the victims of the triple-threat of hurricanes, which have blasted through many of the Caribbean Islands, much of the state of Florida and now threaten other areas on the Gulf coast. Handbell Choir and Chamber Singers Share Music While Touring Japan and Korea
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg University Chamber Singers and Handbell Choir recently returned from a 10-day trip to Korea and Japan, giving them the chance to write entries into their international travel journals and add to their frequent-flyer miles. While there, the groups performed four concerts to packed places of worship and higher education, as well as experienced a variety of Asian cultures through food, excursions and interaction with local communities. Wittenberg University Choir Goes On Tour
2004 Wittenberg ChoirSPRINGFIELD, Ohio - When the Wittenberg University Choir was formed in 1930, a reporter predicted in a review that the new group would go on to earn "a national, even international, reputation." Tiger Basketball Teams Earn NCAA Division III Tournament Berths
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Wittenberg University Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams both earned invitations to the 2004 NCAA Division III Tournament, which opens action this week on campuses across the nation. The Tiger women received the North Coast Athletic Conference’s automatic bid into the tournament after winning the NCAC regular season and tournament for a second consecutive season. When selecting someone to deliver the address during the 159th Commencement ceremony set for May 15, they aimed big, as in Caroll Spinney, also known as Big Bird, who, when fully costumed, stands at eight-foot, two-inches tall.
