SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Wittenberg University honored the achievements of students and faculty members at the annual Honors Convocation Friday, April 8, in Weaver Chapel. The convocation, held with faculty in full academic regalia, recognizes high achievement of students and faculty members in academic and co-curricular activities.
Robert L. Davis, associate professor of English, has been selected to receive the 2005 Alumni Association Award for Distinguished Teaching. The award was established in 1960, and it is the highest recognition Wittenberg bestows on its faculty. It is accompanied by a stipend of $2,000. Candidates must have taught at Wittenberg for more than five years and are nominated by students, alumni, faculty and staff.
Beth Hurst of Loveland, Ohio, was named Alma Mater, an honor bestowed upon a junior women on the basis of character and integrity, service to the community, concern for others and high standards of scholarship. Hurst was also elected to Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa, national senior honoraries, and was awarded the Virginia Lucas Silver Apple Award, presented to a junior who displays the qualities exemplified by Professor Emeritus of Education Virginia Lucas.
Jonathan Scruggs of Alcoa, Tenn., was named Alma Lux, an honor bestowed upon a junior male student who possesses qualities of leadership, scholarship and service. Scruggs was also elected to Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa, national senior honoraries, and received the Jeffrey Y. Mao Alumni Award in Political Science.
Emily Patton of Columbus, Ohio, received the Heimtraut Dietrich Award, which was established in 1981 to recognize the student who best emulates the spirit of the late associate dean of students' devotion to Wittenberg through faith and service.
The M. Alice Geiger Award was presented to Erica Calloway of Reynoldsburg, Ohio. The award, named for the first woman graduate, recognizes a senior woman for outstanding contributions to the Wittenberg campus in the areas of the performing or literary arts, athletics, co-curricular leadership, new programming, special academic pursuit or through special representation at any time during her college career.
The John F. Mitchell Award, honoring the senior man who best represents the liberal arts tradition at Wittenberg, was presented to John LePelley of Cleveland, Ohio. The award goes to a top student who is a positive force in academic, cultural and social aspects of the campus.
The Global Awareness Award, instituted in 1992, recognizes seniors who contribute to greater global awareness within the Wittenberg University community. This year's recipients are Petal Morais and Chinthaka Jayawardhana, both of Sri Lanka.
Jayln Parks of Columbus, Ohio, and Aaron Davis of Springfield, Ohio, were the recipients of the Martin Luther King Jr. Award for positive examples to members of the African American community and to the university. Davis was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa national honor society, and was awarded the Faculty Award for Outstanding Achievement in Biology.
Tristan Murray of New Carlisle, Ohio, received the Broadwell Chinn Award, named for one of the first African American students to enroll at Wittenberg in the 1870s. The award honors the student holding the highest grade point average among African American juniors.
The Omicron Delta Kappa Award for outstanding teaching by a professor who has been on the faculty five years or less was presented to Scott P. Rosenberg, associate professor of history.
Presidential Scholars, named for former presidents of Wittenberg, are the
junior students having the top 12 grade point averages of their class.
Because of several ties, a total of 20 students were named as Presidential

The Outstanding Service to Springfield Award recognizes one student

The Barbara Steel Kane Memorial Award was established in memory of
Barbara Steel Kane, a 1978 graduate of Wittenberg. The award is presented

with the mission of the Education Department and its theme of "Educational
Leaders for Constructive Social Change."

The Tau Pi Phi Award is given to the graduating management major who

The Wall Street Journal Award recognizes the graduating management
major with the greatest potential for career success. Dow Jones and
Company provides a one-year subscription to The Wall Street Journal,
a medallion and a permanent plaque.

The Dr. Woodrow Wilson Prize for Excellence in Management, made available
by the widow and children of Woodrow Wilson, professor emeritus of business
administration (1956-1978), was created to give annual financial awards

Math and Computer Science Department
The Paul Hessler Award, established in memory of Paul Hessler, a member

The Norman E. Dodson Award, named in honor of the late Norman Dodson,

mathematics or computer science.

The Richard A. Little Mathematics Fund was established by
Richard Little, a 1960 graduate of Wittenberg, in memory of his parents.
Part of the fund provides awards to outstanding junior or senior mathematics
or computer science majors.

The Jan Bender Memorial Award, established in honor of the late Jan
Bender, professor of music (1965-1975), is awarded to a senior whose
performance both academically and musically has been excellent and whose
contributions to the Department of Music have been outstanding.

The Elmer Blackmer Award, established in memory of Professor Elmer Blackmer
(1962-1974), is presented to music students who have shown outstanding
achievement in music theory and music skills.

The Remsberg/Klive Award, established in honor of Robert G. Remsberg
(professor of philosophy 1940-1975) and Visvaldis V. Klive (professor
of philosophy 1966-1994). This recognition is given to the outstanding
senior philosophy major and includes a book award.

Physics Department
The Weaver Prize, is awarded to the junior physics major who shows
the greatest potential for a career in physics.

Arthur L. Lutz Award - The Arthur L. Lutz Award is given to a junior
physics major who shows promise for a career in secondary physics education.

The Joe H. Bindley Scholarship, which honors Professor Bindley (1968-1987),
is granted to a junior or senior political science major who exhibits
high levels of leadership or scholarship while pursuing courses of study
leading toward law school or American politics.

The Jeffrey Y. Mao Alumni Award in Political Science is given to junior
political science majors in recognition of outstanding scholarship,

The Bethlehem Steel Award has been established to honor outstanding

The David Hartman Award, established in honor of the late David Hartman,
associate professor of religion (1962-1976), is awarded to an outstanding
senior in the Department of Religion based upon the student's academic
performance, ability to relate the study of religion to the liberal
arts, and contributions to the department and its program.

PHI BETA KAPPA
Founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa
is the oldest and most prestigious of the national honor societies.
Wittenberg's chapter, Omicron of Ohio, was established in 1992.
Phi Beta Kappa exists to give recognition to students who have achieved high academic distinction at Wittenberg. Phi Beta Kappa stresses the importance of the liberal arts and sciences, and elects to membership only those students who have demonstrated their awareness of the liberal arts tradition by building programs broad in scope yet sufficiently concentrated to ensure comprehensive knowledge in one or more disciplines.
Students are normally elected as seniors or, in special cases, as juniors.
They must be majoring in one of the liberal arts or sciences, have a
high grade point average, have taken a variety of courses across the
liberal arts spectrum, and have demonstrated a knowledge of mathematics
and a foreign language appropriate to a liberal arts education.

SMITH SCHOLARS
Recipients of this full-tuition scholarship must maintain a 3.5 cumulative
GPA each year for scholarship renewal. Smith Scholarships are based
on superior academic performance, cocurricular achievements, personal
references, writing ability and SAT/ACT scores. Recipients are automatically
inducted to the University Honors Program.
