SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — In an effort to provide students with even greater access to global management opportunities, Wittenberg University and the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, have partnered to offer a “fifth-year” master of science in management (MSM) degree program for Wittenberg students.
Specifically designed for business and non-business majors, the nine-month master’s program will award scholarships of $5,000 to all admitted Wittenberg graduates in recognition of their outstanding undergraduate achievement. Tuition at the Weatherhead School of Management currently stands at $30,200.
“This opportunity will add a significant business/management component to our non-management majors’ and minors’ education as it builds upon the strong liberal arts foundation Wittenberg provides,” said Wittenberg Provost Ken Bladh.
“More and more companies are seeking employees whose choice of undergraduate curriculum reflects a fundamental value set informed by the study of philosophy, history, ethics and culture rather than an over emphasis on technical business courses,” Bladh added.
The full-time program, which will welcome its first cohort of students this fall, consists of an additional year of study geared toward graduated or recently graduated bachelor degree students who do not have extensive work experience and business/management coursework and who are interested in pursuing career and professional paths in which management education is valuable. The program particularly capitalizes on the strong communication and analytical skills Wittenberg students have developed during their four years as undergraduates. In addition, those admitted will have the opportunity to develop and identify their individual leadership abilities through the Weatherhead School’s internationally recognized Leadership Assessment and Development course, which matches students with an executive mentor in a range of sectors.
Students can also hone their networking and interviewing skills through the program’s
Career Management seminars, and complete a practical experience at a corporation through the MSM program’s team-based consulting course Action Learning. At the same time, students will have access to one of the world’s most advanced business facilities, the Peter B. Lewis building, which offers the most creative, dynamic and electronically connected environment in the world for exploring business ideas and societal trends.
Students successfully completing the MSM program will be awarded a master of science in management from the Weatherhead School of Management and may return after one or more years of full-time work experience to complete an accelerated master of business administration degree in two additional full-time semesters. The total academic period for the combined MSM and accelerated MBA is four semesters – the same as for the traditional four-semester MBA degree.
Graduates of the nationally ranked Wittenberg University will be admitted to the MSM program based on admission essays, bachelor’s degree and grade point average, and will not be required to take additional admission exams. The program will accept 20 students this fall and a maximum of 35 in the future. The application deadline is June 15, and candidates may apply for additional scholarships and fellowships or participate in loan programs. Wittenberg’s Career Center is available to assist with the application process.
Wittenberg joins an elite group of premier liberal arts schools in the region in establishing a cooperative program with The Weatherhead School of Management. Graduates of the MSM program will be considered for a range of job opportunities including market and financial analysis as well as other functional management responsibilities that would normally require an undergraduate business degree.
