An internationally recognized experimentalist, Greene has made profound and lasting contributions to condensed matter physics and the physics of novel materials, particularly superconductors. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at The Ohio State University and a Ph.D. in physics from Cornell University, where she investigated the linear and non-linear far-infrared properties of materials.
Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Illinois in 1992, she conducted research at Bell Laboratories and then Bellcore. Her research at Illinois continues on the physics of highly correlated electron materials. Greene has served on General Council and Executive Board of the American Physical Society, and she is a founding member of the Board of Trustees of the Los Alamos-based Institute of Complex and Adaptive Materials.
In addition, Greene is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is recipient of the Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award of the American Physical Society and of the E.O. Lawrence Award for Materials Research from the Department of Energy. She has authored or co-authored more than 150 publications and has presented more than 250 invited talks at conferences and symposia in her career.
The Phi Beta Kappa Lecture is presented in conjunction with the national organization and local chapter of Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Through such programs as the visiting scholars, the society has become one of the nation’s leading advocates for the liberal arts and sciences at the undergraduate level.
