Author, Professor Laurel Leff To Speak At Wittenberg
In Commemoration Of Holocaust Remembrance Day

April 24, 2006

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Laurel Leff, assistant professor of journalism at Northeastern University, will speak at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in Bayley Auditorium, Barbara Deer Kuss Science Center, on the campus of Wittenberg University. In commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day, Leff’s talk is titled “How the American Press Buried News of the Holocaust.” The event is free and open to the public.

A Northeastern faculty member since 1996, Leff was a professional journalist for 18 years, reporting for The Wall Street Journal and the Miami Herald. She also served as an editor for American Lawyer Media and the Hartford Courant. She teaches undergraduate courses in news writing, media law, magazine writing and legal reporting, and graduate courses in reporting, nonfiction writing and the first amendment.

Leff’s book Buried By The Times: The Holocaust and America’s Most Important Newspaper was published in March 2005. It is an in-depth look at how The New York Times failed in its coverage of the fate of European Jews from 1939 to 1945. Author David S. Wyman says of her book, “This is the best book yet about American media coverage of the Holocaust, as well as an extremely important contribution to our understanding of America’s response to the mass murder of the Jews.”

This event is sponsored by the Departments of Religion and Communication and the University Pastor’s Office.
