Aug. 18, 2006
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Wittenberg University’s Center for Musical Development (CMD) has announced that fall music classes will begin in September.

Discovering Music for Children for ages 3-5 will meet from 5:15-6 p.m. on Monday for eight weeks beginning Sept. 18. This class is designed to begin the young child’s exploration of the world of music. Singing, rhythms, stories, craft projects and an introduction to the sounds and shapes of instruments are some of the activities planned for the class, in which parents are invited to participate.

Ensemble Playing I, II and III will meet on the first Friday of each month, Oct. 6, Nov. 3 and Dec. 1, with times to be announced. Students must know the literature from Suzuki Violin Book 1. Ensemble Class I teaches children how to play together; Ensemble II teaches more playing music together adding simple harmonies and dynamics; and Ensemble III is for the student playing the Minuets in Suzuki Book I and requires some reading skills. Parents are encouraged to attend classes with their children.

Beginning Piano for Kids in grades K-1 will meet from 4:15-5 p.m. and grades 2 and 3 will meet from 5:15-6 p.m. on Friday for eight weeks beginning Sept. 22. In a small group setting, children will learn to read music and musical notation, find keyboard landmarks and play rhythms. Students will also play music of increasing challenge and explore Wittenberg’s state-of-the-art piano lab.

Beginning Piano for high school students and adults will meet from 7-7:45 p.m. on Wednesday for eight weeks beginning Sept. 20. In a small group setting, participants can learn to read music and musical notation and rhythms and keyboard skills.

Voice Class for high school students and adults will meet from 7:30-8:15 p.m. on Tuesday for eight weeks beginning Sept. 19. Students will learn how to warm up, use proper diction and sing for a small group using songs chosen by the teacher and student.

CMD also offers private instruction in piano, voice, guitar and strings.

All classes meet in Krieg Hall on the Wittenberg University campus. For more information and advance registration, call Barb Mackey at (937) 327-7050.
