A Blues and Jazz Workshop featuring artists Karen Patterson, jazz cello, Marion Hayden, bass, Donald Walden, saxophone, Mulgrew Miller, piano, and Andre Wright, drums, will take place from 4:15-5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, in 300 Krieg Hall on Wittenberg’s campus. In addition, Sangmele, a gospel, folk and blues trio, with Walt Michael, guitar, Henry Reiff, bass, and Lea Gilmore, vocals, will perform.
The entertainment at Wittenberg continues with Nerak Roth Patterson, electric guitar, and the Panyard steel orchestra — a steel drum trio. IC and the Flo-Ridas round things out with a hip-hop performance.
“Now that I have some six years of experience with the AACW group, I see how important music can be as a vehicle to cross boundaries that need not only to be crossed, but broken down – racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual,” Wittenberg Professor of Economics David M. Wishart said.
A non-profit organization dedicated to unity in diversity, the AACW’s motto is “Everybody Counts.”
The Wittenberg Blues and Jazz Workshop is sponsored by the Department of Music, the Africana Studies Program, Multicultural Student Programs, the Honors Program, the American Studies Program, the Global Studies Program and the Office of the Provost.
Following the Wittenberg Blues and Jazz Workshop, the AACW Blues/Jazz Festival takes place throughout the weekend in nearby Yellow Springs. The festival begins at 7 p.m. Friday and continues in the early afternoon on Saturday. All proceeds from the festival will go to support AACW.
The festival was extended to include a show at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, with the promise of mystery performers organized by comedian/actor Dave Chappelle, a native of Yellow Springs. Although tickets are not required for the festival, Sunday’s performance is $20, with discounts for students.
