Student-Run Newspaper, Wittenberg Torch,
Introduces New Online Publication

Sept. 19, 2006

The Torch can be found at www.wittenbergtorch.com
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Wittenberg Torch, the student-run newspaper on Wittenberg University’s campus, is more interactive than ever before as it recently debuted a new Web site on the Internet. This technological advance enables the paper to reach an entirely new fan base quickly and inexpensively.

Josh Cohick, class of 2007 from Erie, Pa., editor-in-chief of the Torch, said posting the paper online has been “a long process, one that has been in the works for a year and a half.” After all the hard work, Cohick is confident that both Wittenberg and the Torch will now reap significant benefits.

Cohick said the main reason for online publication is to reach an off-campus fan base, including alumni, parents of students and the Springfield community. These groups do not always have access to the free issues of the Torch distributed weekly on Wittenberg’s campus. That all changed with last week’s first online publication, which can be found at www.wittenbergtorch.com.

“We would get people asking how they can get a subscription to the Torch,” Cohick said. “This wasn’t feasible for us, yet we can accommodate them through online posting.”

The Torch editorial staff members and Wittenberg Director of New Media Bob Rafferty worked with College Publisher, a company that sets up online templates for college newspapers to access and post online. In addition to Wittenberg, the company has an impressive client list, including the University of Notre Dame and Duke University.

“College Publisher is one of the top companies, if not the top,” Cohick said.

There were many challenges in the process of online publication, from finding the right company to do it to finding a Wittenberg student to design and maintain the new Web site. Will Newlin, class of 2008 from Wakeman, Ohio, has assumed the latter role, and Cohick credits him for a lot of hard work. Cohick’s predecessor at the Torch, Christine Maddox, class of 2007 from Springboro, Ohio, also deserves some credit for a job well done.

“Christine spearheaded the idea,” Cohick said. “It was just under me that it actually happened.”
