SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Wittenberg’s Department of English welcomes alumnus Tom Haushalter back to campus for a poetry reading at 4:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, in Ness Family Auditorium, Hollenbeck Hall.

Performing in tandem with professional partner Emmett Tracy, the entertainers will weave original works of poetry into an hour-long performance that, according to Haushalter and Tracy, promises to be both “hilarious and sobering.”

Wittenberg is the second stop on a six-city tour of the Midwest, which the performers are calling their “Heartland Poetry Tour.” Other venues include Oberlin College, Ohio Dominican University, Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va., Martins Ferry, Ohio, Public Library, and Mt. Lebanon, Penn., Public Library.

“Tom was an extraordinary English major, talented, as so many of our best majors are, at both literary criticism and creative writing,” said Robin Inboden, professor of English and chair of the department.

This will be Haushalter’s first time returning to Wittenberg since he graduated in 2002. Since leaving Wittenberg he has earned his master's in poetry from Columbia University’s School for the Arts in New York City.

“I treat this reading as sort of a bow of thanks to the Wittenberg English department that prepared me, and to the theatre department, in which I was trained to speak publicly,” Haushalter said.

“It's an absolute privilege to return under these circumstances. I hope we have a captive audience.”

The reading will be followed by a brief reception in Hollenbeck Hall.
