SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Wittenberg University students attending the East Lakes Division of the American Association of Geographers Conference Oct. 20-21 at the University of Toledo left a lasting impression by taking the only two undergraduate awards given at the conference.
Kara Clunk, class of 2008 and a political science major from Radnor, Ohio, earned first place for the presentation of her paper “A Candle in a Hurricane: NGOs in Russia.” Ryan Deutschendorf, class of 2007 and a political science major from Northville, Mich., took second prize with his paper, “Russia: The Media and Civil Society.”
Four other Wittenberg students attended the conference as well. Karl Fazli, class of 2008 and an English major from Indianapolis, Ind., presented a paper titled “Housing Privatization: Deadlines and Difficulties in Russia.” Cody Grindle, class of 2009 and a political science major from Perry, Ohio, presented a paper titled “The Russian Way: A New Path of Innovation.” Seth Morgan, class of 2008 and a geography major from Chevy Chase, Md., presented a paper titled “Luxury Housing Trends in Post-Soviet Metropolis: Seventy-Five Years of Progress in Ten.” Mark Preston, class of 2008 and a political science major from Naples, Fla., presented a paper titled “The End of Domino: How Capitalism Changed Russian Society.”
The six Wittenberg presentations were divided into two panels chaired by Wittenberg Professor of Political Science and Director of Russian Area Studies George Hudson and Professor of Geography Olga Medvedkov. Discussants for the papers were Olga Vendina, a geographer from the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Wittenberg Director of Government, Corporate and Foundation Relations Lin Erickson.
“It is too bad that there were not six prizes because I think our students would have won them all,” Hudson said.
The papers were inspired by a research trip conducted in Moscow and St. Petersburg in the summer 2006, organized by Hudson and Medvedkov.
