One alumnus, Lewis Shaw, class of 1966, a long-time Wittenberg board member and real estate developer living in Dallas, Texas, agrees that the spirit of Wittenberg is growing stronger. Shaw, inspired by the energy of the strategic plan’s objectives and dynamic new residence hall, has generously offered to underwrite the cost of the transformation of the university’s treasured Commencement Hollow into a multi-use outdoor venue anticipated for completion next spring.
This summer, Shaw discussed with President Mark Erickson the opportunity to help plan and implement a dramatic redesign of the grassy slopes of Commencement Hollow into a multifunctional amphitheater and arena. The new setting will not only serve as the traditional spot for Commencement activities, but also a range of outdoor assemblies.
With a stage and ample power included in the planned design, the Wittenberg community will be able to enjoy outdoor concerts, plays, movies and various presentations in addition to occasional classes on the new “steps” – naturally landscaped seating areas designed and arranged to accommodate both the large graduation crowds as well as the smaller audiences for student presentations.
The redesign plan also preserves the traditions associated with Commencement Hollow, including its fabled “Kissing Bridge,” which will remain an important component of the new and improved landscape.
Additional information on this unique project will be forthcoming.
