Wittenberg Department Of Theatre And Dance Presents
Shakespeare Classic Taming Of The Shrew

Wittenberg students rehearse Taming of the Shrew
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The final Wittenberg University theatre and dance department mainstage production of the 2006-07 school year, Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, April 12-14, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 15, in Chakeres Memorial Theatre.

Directed by Professor of Theatre and Dance Steve Reynolds, Taming of the Shrew is one of Shakespeare's more farcical comedies, relying on puns and humor to tell a story. The comedy shows the conflicts harbored from love and marriage through the tale of two sisters — the refined, younger Bianca, and the older, sharp-tongued Katherine — and their subsequent marriages.

While Reynolds plans to stay true to Shakespeare's original writing, he is adding his own twist to the show.

"Shakespeare's characters will remain the same, but in order to highlight that the play is about power and control, and not about a man's power and control over a woman, I've cast most of the male roles with females and the female roles with males," Reynolds said. "Yes, women will play their parts in britches and the men in dresses."
