2006 Young Women's Summer Institute participants
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Wittenberg University once again plans a wide array of summer academic camp opportunities for high-achieving children, including WISE Academic Camp, Kaleidoscope String Camp, Summer Honors Camp and the Young Women's Summer Institute. Need-based scholarships are available in all programs, according to Barb Mackey, director of community programs in the School of Community Education.

WISE Academic Camp will be held June 17-22 and is open to high-achieving middle school students entering grades six through eight. Each camper will take daily classes in biology, chemistry, creative writing, drama and psychology. The program fee is $510.

Kaleidoscope String Camp is a joint project of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and Wittenberg. The program has been newly configured as an integral training activity of SSO's Youth Symphony and has been designed to accommodate different skill levels. Open to string players entering grades four through nine who have completed at least one year of lessons, the day camp will be held at Wittenberg on June 25-29. The program fee is $250.

Summer Honors Institute will hold two sessions on July 1-6 and July 8-13. The residential camp is open to Ohio residents entering grades 10 and 11 and identified as "gifted learners," according to Ohio Administrative Code 3301-51-15. Students may attend one session or both. The program costs $250 toward room and board; all tuitions costs are funded by the Ohio Department of Education.

Young Women's Summer Institute will take place July 15-21 for 18 high-achieving students who have completed grades six and seven in the 2006-07 school year with strong interests in computer science, math and science careers, and for five K-12 science/math teachers. The program fee is $265, which covers double room and all meals for six nights and seven days. Instructional, administrative and scholarship costs are covered by gifts from Wittenberg donors who support young women's future careers in computer science, math and science.
