Wittenberg Class of 2007 Plans Annual
Baccalaureate Services

May 7, 2007

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – As Wittenberg University makes final preparations for its 162nd Commencement exercises on May 12, the graduating Class of 2007 will observe its Baccalaureate Services at 2:15 p.m. Friday, May 11, in Weaver Chapel, with pre-service music starting at 2 p.m.

Planned in the Christian tradition, University Pastor Rachel Tune has coordinated the services with volunteers from the senior class, who have written prayers, selected scriptures and will share music and reflections.

The title for this year's service, "Commit Thy Way to the Lord," was suggested by Brad Ross from Upper Sandusky, Ohio, and the bulletin cover was designed by Colleen Keppel, an art major from Tipp City, Ohio.

According to Tune, the sub-theme, "do not lean on your own understanding," struck a strong chord with the planners.

"The students really liked the idea that even as they celebrate four years of learning, and are proud of what they have learned here, they still realize as they graduate and go out into an unknown future that they rely on God and God's wisdom and understanding to guide them," she explained.

Kathy Hittle from Noblesville, Ind., Arthur Kraatz from Medina, Ohio, and Karell Pelle from Nairobi, Kenya, will offer reflections, and Terraya Lewis from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, will read a poem. Pastor Tune will deliver the homily.

Senior members of the Wittenberg Choir, Just Eve and Wittmen Crew, the university's men's and women's a cappella singing groups, and a trio featuring Meredith Deitsch from Fairview Park, Ohio, Allison Herrick from Wellington, Ohio, and Leslie Wells from Findlay, Ohio, will provide music.

The tradition of lighting a candle, in honor of those who could not be with them and in memory of loved ones who have died, will be observed.

The senior planning committee selects the beneficiaries of the offering at the Baccalaureate Service, and this year's offering will be divided between Lutheran Disaster Response with whom they have partnered in trips to Biloxi, Miss., to provide hurricane relief, and Springfield Christian Youth Ministry, an after-school teenage ministry with whom a number of students have volunteered.

Pre-service music will be offered by Danny Westlake from Columbus, Ohio, piano, IMANI Gospel Choir seniors, Carolyn Peterson, from Avon, Conn., alto flute, and Professor of Music Donald Busarow, organ.
