Former Professor Of Music Thomas Kennedy Passes Away


SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Thomas Kennedy, associate professor of music and director of band and orchestra at Wittenberg University from 1991 until his disability retirement in 2005, died June 15 at the age of 54 following a lengthy battle with brain tumors.

Kennedy taught courses in conducting, music education, understanding music and flute. He also conducted the Wittenberg Symphonic Band and Wittenberg Chamber Orchestra.

In addition, Kennedy conducted the Springfield Youth Symphony, was assistant conductor of the Springfield Symphony, the conductor of the Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra and flutist in the eclectic trio TOFT.

An arranger and editor for Kalmus Music and many other publishing houses, Kennedy was internationally known for his musical publications and appeared as guest conductor throughout the United States.

Kennedy received his bachelor's in music education from Indiana University, his master's from Pennsylvania State University and his doctorate from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Youth Symphony, Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra, the American Brain Tumor Association or a charity of one's choice.

A memorial service will be held on campus fall semester.
