Wittenberg Hometown Bids To Host
The Simpsons Movie Premiere

July 3, 2007

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The creators of the long-running hit television show The Simpsons have never revealed which Springfield their fictional cartoon family hails from – if there is one hometown that fits such cutting satire. That may all change now as cities from around the nation that share the name Springfield vie to host the forthcoming Simpson's movie, including Wittenberg University's hometown.

Online voting has begun for the distinction of becoming the unofficial Springfield of the The Simpsons, and more importantly, to host the premiere of The Simpsons Movie, which opens in theaters on July 27. Fourteen Springfields submitted five-minute videos for a contest sponsored by 20th Century Fox in hopes of garnering as many votes as possible by the close of voting at 2:59 a.m. (EST) Tuesday, July 10.

The winner will be determined by popular vote on the USA Today Web site. Each computer user can only vote once, so residents of Springfield, Ohio, and members of the Wittenberg community are being encouraged to contact friends and relatives to cast their votes before the contest concludes.

Springfield, Ohio, with a population of approximately 63,300, is the fourth-largest Springfield in the country, following cities by the same name in Massachusetts, Missouri and Illinois. However, led by the Turner Foundation, a local philanthropic organization, community leaders in the Ohio city are hoping to rally support and overcome the odds.
