Wittenberg To Sponsor Noon Luncheon and Lecture Series

Feb. 12, 2008

Springfield, Ohio – In response to many requests, Wittenberg University's Office of Alumni Relations has revived the popular Noon Luncheon and Lecture Series (NLLS), starting on Wednesday, Feb. 20, with a presentation by Staci Rhine, professor of political science and 2008 Laatsch Faculty Scholar.

Each event will include a buffet luncheon followed by a lecture by a Wittenberg professor on provocative topics from their areas of expertise and research and a question and answer session. The series will run on selected dates from noon-1:30 p.m. every two months during the academic year. The price for each NLLS event is $16 per person. All programs are open to the public.

Rhine, whose specialties include American political behavior and the mass media, will speak on "2008 Presidential Primaries and Election." A recipient of the Omicron Delta Kappa Award for Excellence in Teaching, Rhine teaches courses titled Campaigns and Elections and Public Opinion. The event will be held in the Li Room in the Benham-Pence Student Center.

Robert Welker, professor of education, will speak on "Responding to Violence in the Schools: Building Compassionate Youth" on Thursday, April 17, also in the Li Room in the Benham-Pence Student Center. Welker is the director of the Wittenberg Teacher Institute, and his research interests are social issues as they affect the schools including youth violence and character education. He is one of the founders of Youth as Resources, a grant-giving organization for youth providing service to the community.

On Friday, June 6, Bin Yu, professor of political science and 2007 Laatsch Faculty Scholar, will speak on "China: 30 Years Later," in Room 205 of the Joseph C. Shouvlin Center for Lifelong Learning. The event is part of Wittenberg's 2008 Alumni College program. Yu is director of the East Asian Studies program, and his research interests are international relations and East Asian security and politics.
