Professor of Education Robert Welker |
Open to the public, the hour and a half program includes a buffet lunch, followed by the lecture and a question and answer period. Reservations are $16 per person and can be made through Tuesday, April 15.
Welker is the director of the Wittenberg Teacher Institute, which aims to strengthen teaching, learning, and educational research in the P-12 schools and at the university level, and to provide avenues for the professional development of those most involved in the well-being of young people in Springfield and Clark County. His research interests are social issues as they affect schools, including youth violence and character education. He is one of the founders of Youth as Resources, a grant-giving organization for youth providing service to the community.
Named the 2001 Ohio Professor of the Year, Welker has altered the teaching landscape in innovative ways in addition to improving the professional status of front-line teachers. He has consistently worked collaboratively with teachers to help them avoid burnout and has supplied them with the strategies and skills to understand and effectively deal with the social and cultural issues that affect classroom teaching.
