Wittenberg and Avetec Collaborate To Host WISE Academic Summer Camp And Young Women In Science Day Camp

April 16, 2008

Springfield, Ohio — Wittenberg University is collaborating with Avetec, a not-for-profit public benefit research organization, to offer a pair of summer camps.

From June 8-13, Wittenberg and Avetec will host the university's 22nd WISE Academic Camp, which provides academic enrichment in a fun, coed residential camp for students entering grades 6, 7 and 8. From July 14-19, Wittenberg and Avetec will host Young Women in Science (YWS), a weeklong day camp for middle school girls entering grades 7 and 8 with an interest in science, math, physics and computers.

The WISE Academic camp offers students a taste of college life by selecting a major in biology, chemistry, Chinese, drama or leadership and attending a variety of classes. The participants' college experience will be made complete by participating in recreational and social activities that promote team building and leadership.

The YWS day camp offers participants the opportunity to advance their skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), as well as take part in hands-on project-based learning experiences in a creative team atmosphere. The summer program also introduces girls to women working in STEM career fields.

The cost to attend the WISE Academic Camp is $595, which covers the cost of classes, activities, room and board and a Wittenberg T-Shirt. The cost to attend the YWS day camp is $125, which covers the cost of lunches, a camp T-shirt and full registration to the Wings of Women Conference. Full and partial need-based scholarships are available to those with challenging financial situations.

Application materials and details about programming are available on the Wittenberg Web site. The deadline for completed WISE Academic Camp applications and nomination forms has been extended to April 19. Applications received after that date will be considered only if space is available. The deadline for application for the YWS day camp has been extended to April 21. For additional information contact the School of Community Education at (937) 327-7012.

Avetec is a not-for-profit public benefit research organization that aims to facilitate a dramatic reduction in the cost and time it takes to design, develop and test new turbine engines for commercial and military applications.
