Springfield, Ohio — The Global Education Speakers Series, sponsored by the Global Education and Peace Network, enters its seventh year with a packed schedule. Partnering with the School of Community at Wittenberg University and the city of Springfield, the monthly meetings will be held in Room 105 in Wittenberg University's Joseph C. Shouvlin Center for Lifelong Learning, 737 N. Fountain Ave.
The theme of this year's series is "The Global Table: Sharing Food." Each of the 12 programs - starting in September and continuing through August 2009 - will feature the culinary expertise of cultural cooks and chefs. Click here to learn about the entire series.
The series' culinary journey starts at home with a presentation at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, on American barbeque by Bill Fischer, owner of Rudy's Smokehouse in Springfield. Fischer will discuss all things barbeque, with its Native American roots and distinctive styles in the United States South and Midwest.
Presentations will include themes and traditions that range from national (German, Irish, Chinese, Egyptian, Mexican and Greek), religious (Jewish, Hindu, Christian and Muslim) and American regional (barbeque and "soul food"). Among the presenters is Wittenberg Associate Professor of Theatre and Dance Shih-Ming Li Chang, who will speak on Chinese food and celebrations on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009.
The Global Education and Peace Network organized in response to Study Circles, which discussed reactions and responses to the events that took place on Sept. 11, 2001. The 12 programs in the 2007-08 series, including six presentations by Wittenberg professors, alumni or administrators, focused on issues of local and global importance that gave citizens an opportunity to consider their role in a democracy to build a better world.
