Anne Mellor |
Mellor, a professor of English and women's studies at the University of California-Los Angeles, will make a presentation titled "Embodied Cosmopolitanism and the British Romantic Woman Writer."
Mellor's scholarly interests focus on 18th- and 19th-century British literature, women's writing, feminist theory and the visual arts. Her most recent book, Mothers of the Nation-Women's Political Writing in England, 1780-1830, argues that women writers were instrumental in shaping public opinion during the Romantic era.
Mellor has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Keats Shelley Association Distinguished Scholar Award, two Guggenheim Fellowships, three National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Seminar for College Teachers Directorships, and American Council of Learned Societies, NEH, Rockefeller and Australian National University Fellowships in the Humanities. In 2002 she received the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award and in 2004 was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the English Association.
In addition to her Phi Beta Kappa Lecture, Mellor will meet with students and faculty informally outside of the classroom, participate in at least two class sessions and attend the Phi Beta Kappa induction ceremony. Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest academic honor society with more than 500,000 members from its chapters at just 276 American colleges and universities.
