May Concerts Round Out Packed
2008-09 Wittenberg Music Calendar

April 30, 2009

Wittenberg's Symphonic Band will perform on May 3.
Springfield, Ohio — The 2008-09 school year comes to a close in May, but not before the Wittenberg University Department of Music concludes a packed concert calendar with a wide range of performances, all of which are free and open to the public.

Leading things off is an Opera Studio Scene Performance, directed by Susan Musselman, at 8 p.m. Friday, May 1, in Krieg Hall Auditorium. Seven singers will perform seven scenes from seven operas, including A Little Night Music, Lakme, Otello, Cosi fan Tutte, Marriage of Figaro, Don Pasquale, and Hansel and Gretel. Cast members are Andrea Migliozzi, class of 2009 from Gahanna, Ohio; Kathryn Kulma, class of 2009 from Lakewood, Ohio; Kathryn Brunton, class of 2010 from Indianapolis, Ind.; Rebecca Ajer, class of 2009 from Spring Valley, Calif.; Elisabeth Schueler, class of 2010, soprano, from Cincinnati, Ohio; Marisa Perez, class of 2009 from Lakewood, Ohio; and Taylor Lathrop, class of 2010 from Cincinnati, Ohio.

At 3 p.m. Saturday, May 2, in Krieg Hall, a Senior Recital will feature Brittany Steinbrecher, class of 2009, bass, from Delaware, Ohio. Her program includes works by composers Milton Weinstein, Camille Saint-Saens, Joseph Reinagle, Bela Bartok and Gordon Jacob.

The Wittenberg Symphonic Band closes its busy 2008-09 school year with a concert titled Springtime Celebrations at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 3, in Weaver Chapel. The concert features a special guest performance by the Glen Este High School Concert Band, conducted by Sean Kelley, Wittenberg class of 2001.

Glen Este's ensemble will perform selections from their recent performance at the Ohio Music Educators Association Adjudicated Event, which was rated superior. The Symphonic Band presents festive music to celebrate spring, including "Metroplex-Three Postcards from Manhattan" by Robert Sheldon, "After a Gentle Rain" by Anthony Iannaccone, Frank Ticheli's beautiful setting of "Amazing Grace" and Robert Russell Bennett's "Symphonic Songs for Band."

The finishing touch on the concert calendar will be a General Student Recital at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, in Krieg Hall. Scheduled performers include Rachel Lee, class of 2012 from Hickory, NC; Brittany Steinbrecher, class of 2009 from Delaware, Ohio; Olivia Guetle, class of 2012 from Mansfield, Ohio; Parker Wright, class of 2012 from Wilmington, Del., and Professor of Music Dan Kazez.
