Springfield, Ohio — The Global Education Speakers Series, sponsored by the Global Education and Peace Network, enters its eighth year with a packed schedule. Thanks to a partnership with Wittenberg University's Center for Civic & Urban Engagement, the monthly meetings will take place in Room 105 in Wittenberg University's Joseph C. Shouvlin Center for Lifelong Learning, 737 N. Fountain Ave.

The theme of the 2009-10 series is "Sharing Our Stories: Family And Cultural Traditions That Shape Us." Each of the 12 programs - starting in September 2009 and continuing through August 2010 - will feature presentations about ethnic and global cultures as they relate to residents of Springfield/Clark County, Ohio. The 2009-10 series opens with a presentation by Wittenberg Assistant Professor of Art Dan McInnis at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10. The program, titled "A View From The Middle East," will include a photo essay of McInnis' experience in Dubai, where he taught from 2000-03. In addition, Wittenberg students in Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honorary, will make a presentation titled "Our Story," which will chronicle the Global Education and Peace Network's eight-year history.

The 2009-10 series is scheduled to make stops in Greece, Russia, and Ireland. In addition, presentations are scheduled to highlight Islamic culture, African-American stories and the Hindu religion, to name a few. Along with McInnis, Wittenberg faculty will be represented by Professor of Languages Lila Zaharkov, who will present "Stories From My Russian Homeland" at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 2010.

The Global Education and Peace Network organized in response to Study Circles, which discussed reactions and responses to the events that took place on Sept. 11, 2001. The 12 programs in the 2007-08 series, including six presentations by Wittenberg professors, alumni or administrators, focused on issues of local and global importance that gave citizens an opportunity to consider their role in a democracy to build a better world. The 2008-09 series had a culinary theme as presenters discussed a wide variety of ethnic and cultural cooking styles.
