Springfield, Ohio — The 2009-10 school year is officially under way at Wittenberg University, and the Department of Music has plenty to offer during the month of September.

The first event of the school year is the Paths Crossing Paths: Blues/Jazz/Rap Workshop at 4:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, in Krieg Hall. The workshop, hosted by Wittenberg for an eighth consecutive year, features performers from this year's African American Cross Cultural Works Blues/Jazz Festival in nearby Yellow Springs, including jazz cellist Karen Patterson, the 5YZ Men from Lagos, Nigeria, blues guitarist Nerak Roth Patterson, and the blues band Billy Raye and the KlasAct Band.

Paths Crossing Paths: Blues/Jazz/Rap Workshop is a free event, co-sponsored by the Department of Music, the Honors Program, Africana Studies, International Studies, Multicultural Student Programs, Concerned Black Students, American Studies and the Provost's Office. The festival in Antioch begins at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, with performances continuing Saturday and Sunday throughout each day.

At 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, Olivia Guetle, class of 2012 from Mansfield, Ohio, will perform Bach's Suite No. 1 in G Minor, Minuet and Gigue in the first student recital of the year in Krieg Hall.

The Wittenberg Choir, under the direction of Professor of Music Donald Busarow, will present its annual Variety Show to open its 2009-10 season at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 25 and 26, in Krieg Hall. Admission for the show will be charged at the door.

"Allegria," featuring Adjunct Instructor of Music Lawrence Pitzer playing guitar, is the first Faculty Artist Recital of the 2009-10 school year. The recital is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, in Krieg Hall.

Finally, renowned American composer Lowell Liebermann will give a talk/demonstration as a preview of his Piano Concerto #2, accompanied by Wittenberg Associate Professor of Music Christopher Durrenberger, piano, at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, in Krieg Hall.

All music programs are free to the public unless otherwise noted.
