Wittenberg To Host Panel On Health Care Sept. 24

Sept. 23, 2009

Science Center
Entrance to Wittenberg's Barbara Deer Kuss Science Center
Springfield, Ohio — A public forum on health care, featuring medical professionals and industry experts, has been scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in Bayley Auditorium in the Barbara Deer Kuss Science Center.

The event is free and open to all in the Wittenberg and Springfield communities. It is sponsored by the College Democrats organization at Wittenberg, but organizers say they hope individuals of all political persuasions will participate in a civilized, thoughtful discourse.

"This panel will be an excellent way for everyone involved to not only share facts about the health care system and the proposed changes, but also to have questions answered by industry insiders and experts," said Theresa Liszkay, class of 2010 from Gahanna, Ohio, one of the event organizers. "I really want to keep this panel away from petty politics and instead bring an academic eye to the discussion."

Local physicians Mary Jo Groves and Stephen Faegins, Wittenberg professors Stephanie Little and Rob Baker, and Cindy Brewer, a billing manager for a private medical practice, are the panelists. Baker, chair of the Clark County Steering Committee on the Federally Qualified Health Care Center and a member of the Board of Trustees for Rocking Horse Center, a pediatric health care center in Springfield, will present his political platform on health care. A faculty member in political science at Wittenberg since 1987, Baker is currently a candidate for Springfield City Commission.

Groves is a physician at Family Practice and Mercy Primary Care in Springfield, and Faegins is a physician with his own private practice in Springfield. He also works as a professor at Wright State University, serves as team physician for Wittenberg varsity athletics teams and is a member of the Springfield City Schools Board. Little is an associate professor of psychology at Wittenberg and is currently completing postdoctoral hours toward licensure as a clinical psychologist at Oesterlen Services for Youth, Inc. in Springfield.
