Wittenberg's Alumni Relations Fall Lecture Series Continues With Fulbright Scholar In Residence Matselisa Mapetla

Sept. 28, 2009

Springfield, Ohio — The Wittenberg University Office of Alumni Relations continues its 2009 Fall Lecture Series with Fulbright Scholar in Residence in the Department of Sociology Matselisa Mapetla, who will make a presentation titled “Gender and AIDS in a Global Context” on Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the Faculty Dining Room on the second floor of the Benham-Pence Student Center, 734 Woodlawn Ave.

Open to the public, participants may purchase a meal in Post 95 or the Center Dining Room in the student center or they may bring a meal from home and then gather at 11:30 a.m. for fellowship. The lecture by Mapetla, a professor at the National University of Lesotho, begins at 12:15 p.m.

The presentation will address HIV/AIDS and its impact on the people in SubSaharan Africa, which is currently considered the epicenter of the epidemic. Mapetla said she will take a social perspective to argue that while HIV/AIDS is a medical condition, it is also socially constructed and therefore gendered in many aspects. She will address the most important and basic question: is there hope?

The Fulbright Scholar in Residence program allows scholars from abroad to lecture at United States colleges and universities to internationalize the host institution's campus and curricula.

There is no charge for Alumni Relations lecture series events, which are sponsored in 2009-2010 by The Wittenberg Guild. For additional information and to make reservations, contact Linda Himes, events planner for advancement, at (937) 327-7432.
