The production is scheduled to run Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 8-11, in Chakeres Memorial Theatre, 905 Woodlawn Ave. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets for The Dining Room went on sale Monday, Sept. 28, and are sold at the service desk in the Benham-Pence Student Center for $4 each. Classes started for Wittenberg students on Aug. 24, and cast members and Professor of Theatre and Dance Corwin Georges jumped right into rehearsals Aug. 28. Rehearsing five days per week, each cast member is developing the five to seven characters he or she will portray in the production.
Participating in the production "is really a great exercise for actors. It demands they play a variety of roles and to do so in quick succession," Georges said.
The Dining Room was originally written by A.R. Gurney and first produced in New York in 1981. A comedy/drama, the play portrays upper-middle class Americans, or WASPS, and their loss of power and identity in the 20th century. The plot consists of 18 vignettes that are set in a traditional dining room. The scenes cinematically merge – at times, two scenes are interwoven.
The 10-member cast includes Amber Bodi, class of 2010 from Grand Rapids, Ohio; Jessica Bruce, class of 2010 from Powell, Ohio; Ryann Greenberg, class of 2012 from Carmel, Ind.; Laura Kay, class of 2012 from Olmsted Township, Ohio; Jessie Voors, class of 2011 from Fort Wayne, Ind.; Andy Dolvin, class of 2012 from North Canton, Ohio; Ben Johnson, class of 2012 from Milford Center, Ohio; Brien Sewell, class of 2009 from Greenville, Ohio; Ben Turner from Springfield, Ohio; and Collin Wenzell, class of 2010 from Half Moon Bay, Calif. Among them, the actors are expected to play 57 roles in 18 different scenes.
Other students participating in the production include Paden Frank, class of 2010 from Groveport, Ohio, who serves as the assistant to the director, and stage managers Hannah Blechman, class of 2012 from Fairfax Station, Va., and Tatiana de Voogd, class of 2012 from Louisville, Ky.
