Wittenberg Continues 2009-10 Witt Series With
Festival Choral Eucharist For Reformation

Oct. 8, 2009

Bishop Elizabeth Eaton
Springfield, Ohio — The 2009-10 Witt Series continues at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, in historic Weaver Chapel as Wittenberg University welcomes Elizabeth Eaton, Bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), for the annual Festival Choral Eucharist for Reformation Service.

The Festival Choral Eucharist for Reformation uses a model of the German mass that was adapted by Martin Luther in 1526. Instead of simply having a choral structure, the service involves both choral and preaching components. Luther's goal was to highlight preaching, as well as the sacrament. The service uses various hymns, some of which were written by Luther.

Pre-service music by the Wittenberg Choir and the Wittenberg Handbell Choir begins at 7 p.m. The service begins at 7:30 p.m.

The first woman elected bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod and the first in all of Region 6, Eaton was first ordained in 1981 and first served at All Saints Lutheran Church in Worthington, Ohio. She later served as pastor for Good Hope Lutheran Church in Youngstown, Ohio, and Messiah Lutheran Church in Ashtabula, Ohio.

In 2005, Eaton was elected to the ELCA Church Council. Since then, she has been a voting member at three ELCA Churchwide Assemblies, and she is also a member of the Northeastern Ohio Synod Council. Eaton began her six-year term as bishop in 2007.

The Witt Series is a selection of cultural activities annually presented by Wittenberg University. All Series events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Jeannine Fox, Series coordinator, at (937) 327-7470 or via e-mail at jfox@wittenberg.edu.
