Professor Emeritus of History Robert Hartje will make a presentation titled "Pirates Then and Now" at 1:30 p.m. Immediately following Hartje's speech, University President Emeritus William Kinnison, class of 1954, will make a presentation titled "The 1950s in the History of Wittenberg." Both lectures open to the public and free of charge.
Hartje, an honorary member of the class of 1959, will also address his classmates at a dinner at Northwood Hills Country Club that night. His presentation is titled "An Ole Prof Remembers."
Hartje joined Wittenberg's faculty in 1956, embarking on a 32-year career that included the Alumni Association Award for Teaching in 1967. Widely published and the author of two books, Hartje retired in 1981 and now resides in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He also returned to Wittenberg on March 31, 2005, to make the first presentation for an annual lecture program named in his honor by the Department of History.
Kinnison graduated from Wittenberg with a bachelor's degree in history and then obtained a B.S. in education from the university in 1955. He attained a master's degree in American history from the University of Wisconsin in 1963 and his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from The Ohio State University in 1967. Kinnison returned to his alma mater and held many executive positions at Wittenberg, culminating with his presidency from 1974-1995.
Kinnison is the recipient of many honors and awards, including the Flesher Fellowship award from Ohio State in 1967, the Wittenberg Alumni Association Class of 1914 award, the Outstanding Service Award from the Hamma School of Theology and many honorary degrees. The author of several books, Kinnison most recently published Wittenberg: an American College, a comprehensive history of Wittenberg from its founding in 1845 until 1920.
